Position Description

Primary purpose:

  • Performs preventive maintenance and upgrading of pipeline and pipeline facilities. Responds to emergency repairs in order to minimize down time and throughput loss. Develops plans for assigning/completing projects and has accountability for a crew of Pipeliners and/or Welders. May provide input to management on hiring/promotion decisions, performance appraisals, material and equipment purchases

     

    Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Installs cathodic protection units along pipeline which may involve burying such equipment up to six feet underground; prepares shoring as necessary in the preparation of ditches; installs anode beds which may require moving railroad rails which average one ton per 39-feet of rail, using a backhoes and cranes and other heavy equipment. Lays cable, installs rectifiers and poles, digs up pipeline for relocation and/or to install test wires.

  • Installs sleeves on damaged or corroded pipe and performs general maintenance of the pipelines, including pipe fitting and equipment relocation.

  • Operates pick-up trucks; cranes if required. May be required to operate concrete saw, fork lift, winch, tamping equipment, skip loader and/or backhoe in order to dig ditches and unload equipment and materials from freight trucks, and other heavy equipment that projects may require.

  • Performs manual labor required in Right-of-Way clearance. Inspects exposed piping during line crossings to determine adequacy of protective coating.

  • May perform certified welding when necessary.

  • Cleans and paints valves, piping, and other pipeline components on the Right-of-Way.

  • Some refined oil products contain chemicals, which may be related to certain types of illnesses or reproductive toxicity. Some emit vapors under certain conditions, are flammable and may be explosive under certain circumstances.

  • Limited notice available in order to respond to emergency situations and repairs. Subject to 24-hour call-out and callback. Requires stamina in order to work extended, consecutive hours, which may be up to 24 hours or longer.

  • Consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets, employees, and the general public.

Other duties:

  • Installs line markers; cleans, buffs, and recoats pipe.

  • Repairs equipment at tank farms, booster stations and region offices.

  • Maintains roadways and fences in tank farms and booster stations.

  • Performs housekeeping tasks including sandblasting, painting, carpentry, and concrete work.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Driving is a job requirement and a satisfactory driving record, as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required at all times.

    Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, and Outlook.

  • In order to meet the various maintenance and general operational requirements, a mechanical aptitude is necessary.

  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision and/or direction.

  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment and consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.

    Physical demands:

  • Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.

  • Exposure to smells and fumes associated with refined petroleum products.

  • Relies on senses of smell, hearing, and sight to identify and evaluate irregularities and malfunctions.

  • Perform physical labor in a variety of extreme climactic conditions, including walking, bending, stooping, climbing tanks, digging, lifting and general manual labor.

  • Field activities may include walking to and amidst work and/or construction sites, climbing in and out of trenches, working around heavy equipment, negotiating rough terrain, areas of loose rock and working in confined spaces.

  • Frequently may walk up to 5 - 10 miles in a day, including through brush and rugged terrain in temperatures that can range from 20 to 120 F.

  • May lift weights up to 50 pounds unassisted.

  • The balance of the work may involve negotiating rough terrain, mountainous or desert regions, or heavy urban traffic areas.

  • Work may involve the use of weed and brush cutting equipment and other hand tools.

  • Must dig holes in various types of soils, rocks, etc. in order to obtain low contact resistance prior to measuring structure potentials.

    Working Conditions:

  • Extensive travel may be required including overnight stays for several days in order to complete duties at all assignment areas. Overnight travel could average 5 - 10 nights per month.

  • Must be able and willing to respond to emergency situations by wearing a pager and being on 24 hour call out and call back. Position subject to 24-hour call-out, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Overtime required and extended work hours in cases of emergencies.

  • May be required to work alone (unsupervised).

  • Climatic conditions are determined by location assignment and may include severe seasonal changes including both winter conditions with frequent snow or extreme summer heat and sun, depending upon geographic location.

  • Survey work frequently involves getting dirty, sweaty, dusty, and hot, especially during summer months.

  • Drives a 4-wheel vehicle up to several hours per day. Must be able to drive pipeline right-of-way without accidents or equipment damage.

  • Travel to remote areas within a particular region may involve extended periods of driving, both on and off road and could involve exposure to electrical shock, very difficult terrain, traffic hazards, snakes, spiders and other crawling and flying insects, cuts, bruises, etc.

  • Work in remote areas is often performed alone and without direct supervision; judgment is required when consultation with supervisor is not possible. Must schedule and monitor own work.

     

    Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities:

    Above the minimum requirement; not required but advantageous in this position:

  • Prior experience in a technical leadership role or supervisory experience desired.

  • Prior experience requiring mechanical aptitude and skill is a plus.

  • Basic knowledge of cathodic protection and welding.

  • Knowledge of piping, valves and pressures.

  • Knowledge of pipeline operations.

  • Experience with light maintenance (mechanical, electric, electronic).
